Mold selection is an important part of TPE Products development and OEM manufacturing.
Different TPE toys can vary significantly in size, weight, structure and expected order quantity. For this reason, we do not use the same mold solution for every project.
In our TPE production, we mainly use copper molds and fiberglass (FRP) molds for the outer shape. For products with internal channels, the material of the TPE mold core is another important consideration.
There is no single “best” mold. The right choice depends on the product and production requirements.
Copper Molds for TPE Products
Copper molds require a higher initial tooling investment, but one of their main advantages is fast heat transfer.
TPE is heated before being poured into the mold and needs sufficient time to cool before demolding. Because copper transfers heat efficiently, it can help shorten the cooling cycle.
In our factory, some smaller TPE products made with copper molds can complete approximately 3–4 production cycles per mold per day.
The actual production cycle depends on several factors, including:
- Product size
- Product weight
- Product thickness
- TPE formulation
- Mold structure
- Cooling conditions
For products with higher order quantities, a shorter production cycle can make copper molds a practical choice despite the higher tooling cost.
Why We Use Fiberglass Molds for Large TPE Products
For many large and heavy products, we normally use fiberglass (FRP) molds.
Producing a large metal mold can significantly increase tooling cost and mold weight. Fiberglass provides a more practical solution for large dimensions and complex external shapes.
While the limitation is slower heat transfer.
Large TPE products already contain much more material and require longer cooling time. Combined with the lower thermal conductivity of fiberglass, the production cycle can be considerably longer.
For some of our large TPE products, one fiberglass mold normally completes approximately one production cycle per day.
This is one reason why expected order quantity is important when planning an OEM project. If higher production capacity is required, additional molds may be needed.
Copper Mold vs. Fiberglass Mold: Which One Should You Choose?
The decision should not simply be based on which mold material is more expensive.
For a custom TPE toys mold, we normally consider:
- Product dimensions and weight
- Product structure
- Expected order quantity
- Required production capacity
- Tooling budget
- Target delivery schedule
For example, investing in a higher-cost mold may make sense for a smaller product with regular repeat orders.
For a very large product with lower annual volume, an FRP mold may provide a better balance between tooling investment and production requirements.
What About the Internal Mold Core?
For TPE products with an internal channel, the mold core is just as important as the outer mold.
We mainly use copper mold cores, although their cost is higher.
Lower-cost zinc alloy cores are also available. However, based on our production experience, some zinc alloy cores can produce small particles or impurities over time, which may affect the finished TPE surface and production consistency.
For this reason, we prefer copper mold cores for most of our models where stable and consistent production is the priority.
Mold Quantity Also Affects TPE Production Capacity
Choosing the mold material is only one part of production planning.
The number of molds also directly affects daily output.
If one mold can complete three production cycles per day, increasing the number of molds can significantly increase capacity without changing the basic product design.
For large TPE products with much longer cooling cycles, mold quantity becomes even more important when planning larger orders.
This is why, before starting a new OEM project, we normally need to understand the customer’s expected order quantity and delivery requirements.
The Right Mold Depends on the Project
A good TPE mold solution should balance:
Tooling cost + product quality + production capacity + delivery requirements.
Copper molds, fiberglass molds and different mold core materials each have their own applications.
