Can Existing TPE Moulds Be Used for Dark-Colored Products?

Learn why dark-colored TPE products may require dedicated moulds and how OEM buyers can evaluate existing moulds, tooling costs and small trial orders.

Recently, a customer asked us whether we could manufacture dark-colored TPE products using all our existing moulds.

Our answer was No.

However, that doesn’t mean dark-colored TPE products cannot be customized.

Why Can’t All Existing Moulds Be Used for Dark Colors?

In our TPE production, most existing moulds are used for light-colored products.

Once a mould has been used for dark-colored TPE products, it can be very difficult to clean completely before switching back to light colors.

Any remaining pigment or contamination may affect the appearance of subsequent light-colored products.

For this reason, we generally avoid switching moulds between dark and light colors.

This helps us maintain more consistent product appearance and reduce the risk of color contamination.

Option 1: Develop Dedicated Moulds for Regular Orders

For customers planning regular orders of dark-colored TPE products, developing dedicated moulds can be a practical solution.

These moulds are reserved for dark-colored production rather than switching repeatedly between different colors.

This approach can help:

  • Reduce the risk of color contamination
  • Maintain consistent product appearance
  • Simplify production planning
  • Support repeat orders

The tooling investment depends on product size, mould structure and order requirements.

Option 2: Start with a Small Trial Order

What if a customer only wants to test 1 or 10 pieces?

Developing expensive tooling before confirming market demand may not be the best approach.

For some smaller TPE products, a new mould can be relatively affordable.

In these cases, we may recommend starting with a dedicated mould for a small trial order.

This allows buyers to evaluate the color, product appearance and market response before committing to larger quantities.

However, the feasibility and cost of a trial order depend on the product design and mould requirements.

Can We Use an Existing Mould Instead?

Possibly, but it needs to be evaluated individually.

Before confirming whether an existing mould can be assigned to dark-colored production, we need to consider:

  • The product model and mould structure
  • The mould’s current production use
  • Whether it will still be needed for light-colored orders
  • The expected order quantity
  • Future repeat-order potential

Not every existing mould is suitable for conversion to dedicated dark-colored production.

What Information Should OEM Buyers Provide?

If you are planning to develop dark-colored TPE products, it is helpful to confirm the following information with your manufacturer:

  1. Product model or reference design
  2. Required color or color sample
  3. Initial trial quantity
  4. Estimated repeat-order quantity
  5. Packaging or other customization requirements

With this information, we can evaluate whether an existing mould is suitable or whether new tooling would be a better option.
